Project R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Reaching Employment Seeking People through Education Counseling & Job Training
Project RESPECT has grown from a three-four week job readiness/soft skills program into a full service adult training provider with service components that includes recruitment, assessment, training, placement, retention, case management, employer development, customized skilled based training such as "process technician" in the life science industry, financial literacy workshops and so on.
Project RESPECT, located at the Metropolitan Education and Training Center, in Wellston, MO, is part of a major collaboration of partners the includes St. Louis Community College, Family Support Division, St. Louis County, Annie E. Casey Foundation, East-West Gateway Council of Governments, S.L.A.T.E. (St. Louis Agency on Training & Employment). This collaboration is establishing a hub of integrated services for working families. The project provides urban core communities, chronically unemployed and underemployed job seekers the opportunity to access services that assist in stabilizing individuals and families within our communities.
From July 2004 through 2005, over 1017 students attended training programs at the MET Center which resulted in a 75% graduation rate, 80% placement rate and retention rates of 75% at three months, 82% at six months and 80% at one year. These rates are higher than some national trends.
Because lack of transportation prevents many low income residents from finding and maintaining employment, Project RESPECT seeks out potential employers who are within a 1½ mile radius of the MetroLink, St. Louis' lightrail public transportation system.
